IELTS Speaking practice: Environment
Climate change, pollution, conservation and sustainability — one of the most common IELTS essay themes.
Environment questions are common in Speaking Parts 1 and 3, and a cue card may ask you to describe an environmental problem in your area. Examiners reward natural, extended answers with a range of vocabulary — not rehearsed scripts.
What to practice
- Practise extending Part 1 answers to two or three sentences with a reason or example.
- Prepare a flexible Part 2 story (an environmental problem you've noticed) you can adapt to several cue cards.
- Drill linking phrases for Part 3 opinions: "I'd argue that…", "It depends on…", "On balance…".
- Record yourself and check fluency — aim to keep talking without long pauses.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Memorising answers word-for-word, which sounds unnatural and is penalised.
- Giving one-word or one-sentence answers that don't let you show your range.
- Drifting off-topic in Part 2 instead of covering all the cue-card prompts.
- Using the same simple linkers ("and", "because") throughout.
