IELTS Speaking practice: Technology
The internet, automation, social media and how tech reshapes work and daily life.
Technology features heavily across all three Speaking parts — your phone, the apps you use, how technology has changed daily life. The aim is relaxed, natural speech with good range, not a memorised list of gadgets.
What to practice
- Prepare to talk about a piece of technology you use a lot, with reasons you find it useful.
- Practise comparing past and present ("It used to be…, but now…") for Part 3.
- Use a range of opinion language and hedging: "I suppose…", "to some extent…", "arguably…".
- Keep answers personal and specific — examiners remember real detail, not generic claims.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Listing devices with no explanation or personal angle.
- Sounding rehearsed, especially on common topics like smartphones.
- Avoiding the question because the vocabulary feels hard — paraphrase instead.
- Letting answers run on without clear structure in Part 3.
